08/10/2007 - Montreal, QC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top-seeded and defending champion Roger Federer, second-seeded former winner Rafael Nadal and American Andy Roddick were among Thursday's third-round winners at the $2.45 million Rogers Masters -- the sixth of nine Masters Series events this year.
The world No. 1 Federer dispatched helpless Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-1 in a mere 45 minutes on Day 5. The super Swiss has now won his last 14 matches in Canada.
The reigning Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Australian Open champion Federer defeated France's Richard Gasquet in last year's Rogers Masters finale in Toronto. This event alternates between Montreal and Toronto each year.
Federer also captured this event in Toronto in 2004.
Nadal had to come from behind in order to beat talented Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The reigning three-time French Open champion Nadal was the Montreal titlist in 2005.
For the better part of two sets, Mathieu was the better player against Nadal on Thursday, but the powerful Spaniard turned things around in the second stanza and then dominated the third to advance in 2 hours, 42 minutes.
The fifth-seeded Roddick, who notched the 400th match win of his ATP career, whipped Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-3 in just over an hour.
Last year's U.S. Open runner-up Roddick, fresh off his title last week in Washington, DC, titled here in Montreal in 2003 and was the 2002 and 2004 runner-up in Toronto.
Roddick currently leads in the standings for the U.S. Open Series, which links 10 summer events to the U.S. Open, creating a cohesive, six-week summer tennis season for the ATP and WTA Tour's professional tournaments in North America. It runs for six weeks and culminates with the U.S. Open.
Third-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic and fourth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko joined the parade into the quarterfinals, as Djokovic dumped 2003 Montreal runner-up David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-2, 6-3, while Davydenko held off his 14th-seeded fellow Russian Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 at Uniprix Stadium.
An upset came when dangerous Czech Radek Stepanek took out 12th-seeded German Tommy Haas 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Stepanek, who captured a U.S. Open Series event in Los Angeles three weeks ago, will meet Davydenko here on Friday.
Australian Lleyton Hewitt also advanced after he defeated Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 while Canadian Frank Dancevic downed Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to move on.
Federer will match up against Hewitt, while Nadal takes on Dancevic on Friday. Roddick will play Djokovic.
The 2007 Rogers Masters titlist will collect $400,000.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
