Maver's last-second FG sends Stamps past Hamilton

Maver nailed all three of his field goal attempts on the afternoon for the Stampeders (2-0) as they assumed control of first place in the Western Division. Quarterback Henry Burris responded by converting 24-of-37 passing for 257 yards and a pair of touchdowns to offset an interception and a lost fumble.

Kevin Glenn kept Hamilton (0-2) in contention with his 26-of-34 passing for 356 yards and a score, while Arland Bruce III recorded seven receptions for a game-high 104 yards in defeat.

On his first touch of the ball in his new home stadium, Hamilton's Marcus Thigpen returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown, giving the hometown crowd something to cheer about less than three minutes into the contest. Last week Thigpen earned special teams player of the week honors as he became the first player with two return touchdowns in a game since Keith Stokes in 2002 with Montreal.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
