Rezai stuns Venus in Madrid final

05/16/2010 - Madrid, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Aravane Rezai of France earned her third career WTA Tour title with a straight-set victory over Venus Williams in Sunday's final at the Madrid Open.

Rezai notched a 6-2, 7-5 triumph for her third win this week against a former No. 1 player. She also beat Justine Henin in the first round and Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals of this French Open tuneup.

The 24th-ranked Rezai won her two previous titles last year, taking the crowns at Strasbourg and Bali. She improved to 3-2 all-time in WTA finals.

Williams was gunning for her third title of 2010 and fell to 2-2 in finals this year. She successfully defended titles at Dubai and Acapulco, while losing to Kim Clijsters in the Miami final.

Rezai, who reached the final on Saturday when Lucie Safarova retired after the first set with a thigh injury, needed just 28 minutes to take the first set from Williams.

The match appeared destined for a third set after Williams regrouped and opened leads of 4-1 and 5-2 in the second. However, Rezai rallied and saved a total of six set points before finally finishing off Williams for the biggest win of her career.

Rezai earned a first prize of $780,580 and improved to 2-1 lifetime against Williams.
